phs Compliance has partnered with a premium global chain of health clubs and gyms, to deliver a comprehensive range of compliance and energy-efficiency services across its UK estate. Since 2024, this partnership has included:
One of the most significant programmes involved a nationwide LED lighting upgrade across multiple indoor tennis courts. We managed the project from assessment through to installation, helping this organisation achieve competition-standard lighting, reduce energy consumption and support its long-term sustainability objectives.
The client operates a portfolio of high-end fitness facilities, many of which include indoor tennis courts requiring consistent, high-performance lighting. However, the existing fluorescent systems were becoming inefficient, costly to maintain, and no longer aligned with modern standards for performance or energy efficiency.
The client needed a solution that would not only enhance lighting quality to meet competition-level requirements but also significantly reduce energy usage and ongoing operational costs. Just as importantly, the work had to be delivered with minimal disruption to members and daily operations, while fully complying with strict health and safety regulations across multiple sites nationwide.
Delivering this project at scale presented several logistical and technical challenges. Work needed to be carefully scheduled around busy gym environments, meaning installations had to take place without interfering with normal operating hours or impacting customer safety.
The installation itself was complex, involving high-level lighting systems that required specialist equipment such as MEWPs and skilled teams working in coordination. Managing consistency across multiple locations added another layer of complexity, alongside the need to safely remove and recycle large volumes of outdated lighting. Ensuring compliance with SMSTS, SSSTS and CDM Regulations 2015 throughout the project was also essential.
A fully managed, end-to-end solution was implemented to overcome these challenges. This began with detailed pre-surveys and close collaboration with lighting suppliers to produce tailored design drawings aligned with the client’s specifications.
The project was delivered under full SMSTS and CDM-compliant management, with SSSTS-certified supervisors overseeing works on site. All materials, plant equipment and access solutions were carefully coordinated and delivered to each location in advance.
To avoid disruption, installations were carried out overnight. On average, each site saw the removal and recycling of approximately 300 fluorescent triple light fittings, replaced with around 180 high-efficiency LED units. Specialist access equipment and coordinated teams ensured safe and efficient installation at height.
The service also included responsible waste management, along with thorough post-installation testing, inspection, and snagging to ensure all systems met the required performance standards before final handover.
The upgrade delivered a significant improvement in both performance and efficiency. Lighting across all indoor tennis courts now meets competition-standard lux levels, creating a brighter, more consistent playing environment for members.
Energy consumption has been significantly reduced thanks to the transition to high-efficiency LED technology, leading to ongoing cost savings and a reduced carbon footprint. The overnight installation approach ensured there was no disruption to daily operations, maintaining a seamless experience for gym users.
Beyond the immediate upgrade, additional lux-level optimisation projects have since been delivered across the wider estate, further enhancing energy efficiency and performance.
This project demonstrates how a carefully planned and expertly delivered lighting upgrade can transform both user experience and operational efficiency. By combining technical expertise with a strong focus on compliance, sustainability, and minimal disruption, the client now benefits from modern, high-performance lighting that supports both member satisfaction and long-term cost savings.
A lot of bad advice can get repeated as fact when it comes to electrical and fire safety. Some compliance myths start with a grain of truth, then get simplified until they become misleading, and
Waiting until something goes wrong often costs more, causes more disruption and costs more than ensuring your appliances are in working order. Not only that, but it can also make it harder to keep
Safety checks and sustainability work are, understandably, treated as separate jobs, but there's actually more overlap between them than people expect. A well-maintained building tends to run more
