Air Conditioning & Heat Pump Leak Checks
Leak testing is required by law for air conditioning systems and components in workplaces, since fluorinated gases can be contained within refrigerant gas used for chilling and cooling. The European Union’s F-Gas Regulation 517/2014 lays out the requirements for those who manufacture, use, sell or service fluorinated greenhouse gases with the express purpose of minimising or preventing the release of fluorinated gas into the atmosphere.

Annual leak checks are recommended for air-conditioning units rated up to CO2 50 tonnes without any leak detection system pre-installed. Larger air conditioning units are subject to more frequent leak checks over a twelve-month period. Where leak detection systems are already in place, the obligation to conduct leak checks reduces accordingly for smaller units to a twenty-four month interval.
Leak checks involve direct methods of leak testing by inspecting circuits and components representing a mechanical risk of leakage with an electronic gas detector, leak sprays, ultraviolet (UV) detection fluids, and oxygen-free nitrogen to pressurise the circuit after the recovery of the refrigerant gas. Qualified air conditioning engineers will also record system pressures, temperatures, compressor run currents and carry out visual inspections.
phs Compliance air-conditioning engineers routinely leak check and inspect a wide variety of units – from 1.5kw to 100kw air conditioning systems. We also inspect air handling units and Lossnay heat recovery systems. With over 40 combined years of experience, our engineers are accredited to City and Guilds F-Gas & ODS (2079) and City and Guilds NVQ Level 2 in Air Conditioning 600/091/3 as a minimum.
