The Ultimate Guide to EV Charging in UK Workplaces

Offering EV charging points could be an excellent initiative for your business. Whether you’re building a ‘green’ brand or recruiting top talent, EV charging in the workplace offers multiple benefits.

Can I charge my EV at work?

There’s no legal requirement to provide EV charging at work. However, workplace charging can potentially double EV range, providing an attractive perk for employees. For drivers without off-street parking, EV charging at work could be hugely beneficial.

Is EV charging at work free?

Some workplaces offer free or low-priced charging for employees through standalone chargers or in partnership to mitigate the cost.

What types of EV chargers are available?

On the market, there are many different types of EV chargers to be aware of. Knowing their features can help you choose the best EV charger type for your needs:

Slow (up to 3kW)

Slow chargers use Type 1 or Type 2 connectors and are best suited for top-ups or emergency charging.

Fast (up to 22kW)

Fast chargers using Type 1 or Type 2 connectors are a recommended solution, generating between 7kW and 22kW of charge.

Faster speeds are generally only found on public and commercial networks, where your building has a three-phase electricity supply. We install fast chargers with a Type 2 socket for widespread compatibility.

Rapid (up to 43kW AC or 50kW DC)

Rapid chargers can charge the average pure EV up to 80% in 30 minutes. EV charging stations can be configured for either AC or DC charging. Requires a Combined Charging System (CCS) charger.

Ultra-Rapid (up to 350kW DC)

Ultra-Rapid charging delivers speeds of up to 350kW, but is only available on public networks. With an Ultra-Rapid charger, the average EV will be ready to drive in 15-20 minutes.

Do you need building regs for an EV Charger?

Current building regs for commercial retrofits and new builds require you to install a minimum of one EV charger for 10 parking spaces. You must also provide cabling for every 5 extra spaces.

For small fleet EV charging at work, you may only need 2-3 chargers. However, you can future-proof your system now by installing additional chargers to save time and money in the long run.

Is there any funding available for workplace EV Chargers?

Grants and incentives are available to help your business meet the costs of your EV chargers:

  • Workplace Charging Scheme: This grant provides £350 per socket for up to 40 charging points across all your work sites. You’ll receive a voucher which must be redeemed with an OZEV-registered installer.
  • Depot Charging Scheme: This scheme covers fleet depots and provides grants of up to £1 million to cover 75% of your installation costs across all sites.

Requirements and regulations for EV charging at work

EV chargers are treated as work equipment and are subject to a rigorous regulatory framework.

Your responsibilities as an employer

As an employer, you have a duty under The Provision and Use of Work Equipment Regulations 1998 to ensure equipment is suitable and safe. Your chargers should be installed and maintained by a competent person, and adequate training should be given to employees.

Installation and compliance

An OZEV-certified installer must carry out the installation. Chargers must be new, have a three-year warranty, and conform to cybersecurity regulations. When installation is complete, you’ll be issued with a BS7671 Electrical Installation Certificate.

Our electric vehicle charging solutions are fully compliant for your peace of mind.

Ongoing EV Charger Maintenance

As part of your health and safety duties, all EV chargers must be regularly maintained in line with The Electricity at Work Regulations 1989.

Here’s how we meet your maintenance requirements to ensure your charging network is operating safely and efficiently:

  • A non-intrusive service every 3-6 months: Visual inspection, cleaning, RCD testing, and a service report with photos.
  • Comprehensive service every 12 months: Internal component check, RCD tripping check, complete electrical testing and cleaning. Detailed report with internal and external photos.
