Power Quality Services

What are Power Quality Services?

Power quality services are range of services offered by PHS Compliance that enable us to advise our customers on how they might be able to save money on energy bills and reduce the amount of carbon they produce at the same time.

What does it involve?

Power quality services begin with PHS Compliance Engineers connecting a piece of sophisticated monitoring equipment to your power supply, generally at source where the supply enters the building. Depending on the nature of the analysis, the equipment can be configured to detect certain data from the flow of energy and can capture such data at pre-determined intervals. Having completed the data capture over a period of days or weeks, the Engineer will return and disconnect the equipment returning it to head office for a specialist Engineer to download and review the data.

Why do I need PQS?

Modern buildings are generally designed with energy efficiency in mind and built using state of the art materials and technology to ensure maximum efficiency throughout its life cycle. However, in older buildings and indeed some newer, the original design no longer can support the influx of modern equipment such as computers, high frequency lighting, A/C and variable speed drives. The impact of the introduction of these “non-linear” loads is that the way in which they use and affect the power in your building can be severely detrimental to the safety and efficiency of the infrastructure and in some cases may lead to loss of supply, damaged equipment and in severe cases, fire.

Who will carry out the work?

This type of work will be carried out by a fully qualified electrician who is experienced in the field of power quality and is trained to configure and install the monitoring equipment in the correct location.

Will it impact on my workplace?

Power Quality Monitoring is a relatively non-evasive procedure, aside from the removal of panel covers within the main electrical distribution room there is very little disruption. The whole process of configuring and installing the monitoring equipment should take no longer than 1 hour in the most challenging situation.

What Will I receive?

Upon completion of the monitoring, you will be supplied with a report detailing the findings of the survey which will include information on the level of power you consume at various times of the day. The statistics will also provide information on the amount of power wasted, the voltage and current levels in each phase and neutral conductor, presence of harmonic distortion, power factor information and much more. Ultimately your report will tell you if there are any issues that can be addressed by installing simple correction equipment and will further provide tangible results on potential cost and carbon savings with a “payback” period calculated using software.

How much will it cost?

Initially the survey can be carried out without any charge; cost will only be incurred if you decide to act upon the information contained within the report and commission PHS Compliance to design and install correction equipment to help you achieve efficiency savings. In some cases our clients see as much as a 20% reduction in their energy bills and up to 40% reduction in their carbon output. The installation of the equipment can be paid for over a number of months or years funded by the money saved in reducing energy bills.

What happens if I don’t monitor my energy supply and consumption?

In many cases there may be no issues, however if you do have a system that is performing poorly, the impact may be seen through flickering lights and computer screens, heating of electrical cables, deterioration of electrical equipment and penalties from your supplier for inefficient use and production of harmonics.
