Why do I need to carry it out?
Carrying out gas installation work is generally a practice that is planned due to the construction of a new building, alteration to an existing building or emergency repair to bring an existing installation up to date. The repair of defects recommended during gas system and appliance inspection work is an essential part of planned maintenance required to ensure the process is completed and safety and compliance is achieved.
Who is responsible?
Having received a report stating that parts of the installation are not safe, or require immediate improvement, the duty holder (often the senior manager within a business) has a duty to ensure the recommendations are acted upon and repairs are made. By completing this part of the process you are ensuring that your obligations under the Gas Safety (installation and use) Regulations 1998 are met.
What does it involve?
The repair of defects found during test and inspection is a relatively simple process. Using the report findings as a reference, PHS Compliance gas engineers will decide the best course of action to repair each item. Having established this for each item on the report we will produce a quotation including labour and materials and provide this as a no obligation offer to you. Having agreed to proceed, we will attend site at a time that suits you and your business and make the necessary repairs. Alternatively, if agreed in advance, the Engineer will repair defects during the inspection process ensuring all parts of the gas system are left safe and operable.
Who should do the work?
It is vital that this type of work is carried out by a qualified and experienced GAS SAFE registered gas engineer. Such engineers should have experience of this type of work specifically enabling them to interpret the report correctly before making repairs. When selecting your contractor you should ask to see evidence of their qualifications and experience in this type of work.
Will it impact on my workplace?
There will be some impact such as short periods of downtime on gas appliances and heating systems, installation of new equipment, and use of power tools; however, with careful planning and strong liaison between you and your contractor, this can be conducted at a time that best suits your business.
What will I receive?
Upon completion of any gas installation or repair work you should receive a certificate detailing:
- Specifics of the installation
- The items installed
- Repairs made
- Test results achieved
How much will it cost?
Cost will be calculated based on the number of defects to be repaired and their nature. All materials, labour and travelling costs etc will be taken into account a quotation for the total value will be produced before any work is carried out.
What could happen if I don’t do it?
Failure to carry out repairs recommended during test and inspection work will ultimately render the process as a waste of time and money. The purpose of the initial inspection is to highlight areas of the installation that require improvement and repair to enable you to achieve safety and compliance. It is vitally important to repair ALL defects as failure to repair minor defects may lead to problems in the future.
